All the games we like to play when we get together:

Dutch Blitz!

Okay so my friends and I are HUUUUGE cards fans. We know so many card games I don’t think I can post them all here (i may just make another tab for them ;) ) But this card game is one that I just had to post…its called Dutch Blitz, also known as Ligretto. Now this isn’t your ordinary card game, because it requires special Dutch Blitz cards that you can usually get from Christian bookstores, or Barnes and Noble haha.

Now I could try to explain the game, but that would take forEVER, especially without the use of graphics and diagrams. So I will instead provide you with a comprehensive website about how to play the game.  This game is a fast paced game that can get REALLY addictive. TRUST me on this one. Try it out and let me know what you think!

Celebrity!

This is one of my favorite games to play in a medium-sized gathering of friends. You generally need about 8-10 people to play [and its easier if the number is even, doesn't have to be of course].

First, cut up slips of paper, and give 3 to each player. Each player writes the name of a well-known celebrity on each slip (one per slip). These slips are then folded twice or thrice, and put into a bowl/hat/etc.

A player starts by pulling a name out of the pool. The player gets 1 minute to do as many slips as possible. Now there are three rounds to Celebrity:

Round 1: Description

In this round, you can describe each celebrity, just don’t say any part of their name. For example, for “Brad Pitt”, you can say “He is married to Anglina Jolie and was in Oceans 11″. The descriptions should be short, simple but descriptive enough that the players team can recognize the celebrity. Once the celebrity is identified, the player chooses another. After the 1 minute is up, it’s the other teams turn. When all the slips are finished, each team counts how many slips its players acquired. After these are tallied, the slips are re-folded, put back into the pool, and you move to Round 2.

Round 2: One Word

In this round, each player can only say ONE WORD as a clue to his or here team to describe the celebrity. For example, for “Brad Pitt”, you could say “Oceans” or “Troy”. It helps to remember what was said about each celebrity or how the celebrity was described in Round 1. If the player says the wrong word, he or she must act out the celebrity. After all the slips have been used, you tally, re-fold and pool them again and move to Round 3.

Round 3: Charades

This is probably the FUNNEST round. In this round, each player must act out the celebrity. For “Brad Pitt”, once again, you could act out “Oceans” to tip off your team that he was in “Oceans 11″. This can get interesting when you have celebrities such as Shakira, Beyonce and The Crocodile Hunter. After all the slips have been used, tally up the scores from all the players for this round, add them to the scores from the last two rounds. The team with the most tallies are your winners!!

———————————————————-

Things to Keep in Mind:

  1. If you say any part of the celebrities name or say more than one word in round 2, your turn is over and you must pass the pool of slips to the next team.
  2. You cannot rhyme words with the celebrities’ names.
  3. You cannot hum or make sounds in round three.
  4. No gestures.
  5. Fictional Characters are allowed as long as they are well-known.
  6. There is no passing allowed-if you don’t know anything about the celebrity or your mind blanks, try to break up the name.
  7. If a majority agrees that a celebrity in the pool is unfair and not commonly known, it can be thrown out of the pool.

And that’s Celebrity! Give yourself a good hour or so to play especially when everyone is hyped!! It’s boring if people are tired and not into it. Give this game a try the next time you and a bunch of friends get together!!

Mafia!

There are several variations to this game. Here’s the one we play.

You need 7 or more people to play this game. There are 2 “Mafia” or “Assasins” and 1 police officer. In order to assign these roles, we use cards. Aces stand for Assassins (Mafia), and Kings for Cops (or Kops to remember more easily ;) . One person is the Moderator who plays the role of “God” and does not need to be assigned a card. The remaining players get number cards (2-10) which signify that they are townspeople.

Now to play, the moderator calls for nightfall where everyone closes their eyes. The Moderator then asks for the two players with the Aces (the Mafia) to open their eyes. This is when they have the opportunity to recognize their fellow mafia. The Moderator silently assigns them numbers (Mafia I and Mafia II). Next he calls for the police officer to open his/her yes. Now the Moderator knows who the Mafia and Cop are. The Moderator now asks for Mafia I to open his/her eyes and pick someone to kill. After acknowledging whoever Mafia I points to, he has Mafia II open his/her eyes and pick someone to kill. The only way a person can die is if the two mafia point at the same person. This means that since the 2 Mafia don’t have their eyes open at the same time when choosing their ‘victim’, they need to come up with a way to communicate so as not to alert the other players.

Next, the Cop opens his/her eyes again. The point of the cop is to accuse someone of being a Mafia, and the Moderator tells the cop whether or not the person he/she has accused is the Mafia. After the cop is finished, the Moderator has everyone open their eyes, and announces whether someone was killed or not (if the two Mafia pointed at the same people to kill). The ‘townspeople’ then speculate about who they think the killer is.

Normally, three people are accused and nominated to die. These people have the opportunity to defend themselves and provide reasons as to why they are innocent, or why they believe it is someone else. The cop has the opportunity to reveal that he or she is the cop, but doing this early on can result in his death in the following rounds. Once everyone has defended themselves, the townspeople vote, and majority rules-whoever the majority votes for, dies.

*Keep in mind–Once someone dies, he or she CAN NOT TALK. The urge to scream “OMG I KNEW IT!” can be very great, so try to hold it in ’til the end!.

The game then continues. Once 1 Mafia dies, the remaining Mafia has more power and has the ability to kill alone. At the end, the only way Townspeople win is if BOTH Mafia are dead. If 1 Mafia and 1 towns person remain, the Mafia still wins.

This game can get pretty intense, so try not to play it if you have old neighbors who hate your loud parties!
